Lights out, it's time to dance!

🕺 What is No Lights No Lycra?

No Lights No Lycra (NLNL) is a weekly dance session held in complete darkness – a place where you can move however you like, without judgement, pressure or performance. It’s not a dance class. There are no mirrors, no lights, and no right or wrong moves. Just one glorious hour of dancing with nobody watching,

We’re part of a global community of NLNL chapters, and this one is proudly held on Whadjuk Noongar Country, here in Perth~Boorloo.

💡 Why the darkness?

The lights are off so you can be you. No awkwardness, no comparison, no need to keep in time or follow along. Just movement that feels good for your body. When the lights go down, the dancefloor changes - people let go, tune in, and reconnect with their bodies and their joy.

Whether you're feeling playful, powerful, emotional, energetic or all of the above – you're welcome on our dancefloor.

Our approach fosters meaningful human connection in a revolutionary way: through shared experience rather than verbal interaction. Dancing together in darkness dissolves social barriers, creating a profound sense of belonging where participants feel both independent and part of a collective. In this judgment-free space, self-expression flows without performance pressure, allowing authentic connection.

🎶 What happens at a session?

When you arrive, you'll be welcomed by a NLNL Dance Captain, who will show you the space and explain where everything is and how everythings works. When you hear the countdown, that's your cue - the lights are about to go out!

Find your space, shake off the day, and move however feels good. We dance for one hour – no talking, no phones, no spectators – just music, movement and mood-boosting magic.

Each playlist is lovingly curated with a mix of bangers, throwbacks, deep cuts and surprise favourites.

Every week is different, and every session tells its own story.

🌈 Who’s it for?

Everyone. Every body. Every background.

You don’t need dance experience, fitness levels, or a particular ‘vibe’. NLNL is for the joyful, the anxious, the curious, the burnt out, the dance-floor lovers and the ones who never thought they were dancers at all.

We especially want to welcome anyone who might feel out of place in more mainstream dance or fitness spaces - this could include people with disability, LGBTQIA+ folks, carers, neurospicy people, anyone feeling a bit isolated, people doing it tough financially, and folks with diverse bodies.

We see you (well, until the lights go out), and we welcome you!

If you’ve ever wanted a space to just be, this is it.

📍 Where & When?

We dance every Monday night (except public holidays) at Leederville Town Hall. Head to the Tickets & Info page for upcoming dates, times, venue details and ticket links.

Come solo, bring a friend, or fly completely under the radar – it’s totally up to you.

🧠 Why we do it

Dancing in the dark is more than just fun – it’s powerful. NLNL supports mental health, encourages joyful movement, and builds real community. It’s a reset button, a midweek mood lift, and a reminder that you don’t have to be ‘on’ all the time.

We believe movement is for everybody and every body – and that in today's world we each need a chance to dance in the dark, a date with yourself on the dancefloor, an hour with no distractions, some space just for you.

💌 Who’s behind it?

No Lights No Lycra began on a cold Tuesday night in June 2009, when five people walked into a church hall in Fitzroy, Melbourne. The lights were low, the heaters were glowing, and Amma the Hugging Saint watched over them from the wall as they danced to Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien by Édith Piaf.

It was the start of something huge.

Created by two rebellious dance students who were tired of self-critiquing in the mirror, NLNL was a radical return to the joy of dancing for yourself – not for the audience, not for the mirror, and definitely not for the lycra. Word spread, and soon the hall was full of people who just wanted to move freely, like they do in their own lounge rooms, but with the added power of connection and community.

Fifteen years on, NLNL has grown to over 60 locations around the world – and here in Perth~Boorloo, we’re proud to be part of that movement.

I’m Bryony, the Dance Commander for NLNL Perth~Boorloo. I’ve been lovingly running the local chapter since 2014. I fell in love with NLNL because it makes space for people to come exactly as they are, and leave feeling lighter, looser, and more connected. Every week, I get to witness people drop into their bodies, shake off the noise, and experience joy – and it’s a total privilege.

Corroborees and Nyumbis have been taking place on this land for more than 65,000 years as an essential part of the cultural and spiritual life of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. NLNL is held on Whadjuk Noongar Country, and we express our gratitude and respect to elders past and present for tending to the land and waters so that we may be here today. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.
