NLNL Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS NO LIGHTS NO LYCRA?
NLNL is a weekly lights-off chance to dance in the dark for the pure joy of dancing. It’s a place to shake out the stresses of the week, let go of your inhibitions and completely be yourself. It’s a drug and alcohol-free space for you to dance by yourself, for yourself. We run 2 sessions each Monday night 6:30-7:30pm and 7:45-8:45pm at Leederville Town Hall, 84 Cambridge St, West Leederville.
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC IS IT?
We mix it up with all genres, from dancefloor classics to unexpected gems, and it varies week to week. You'll hate some of it, but you'll love a lot of it. Scroll through our socials for a taste of our previous playlists!
HOW DO I GET TICKETS?
Tickets are available via the 'Buy tickets' button below. Please note there are NO door sales!
You can keep across any special events or theme nights by joining our mailing list (no spam, promise)!
NLNL was founded by two rebellious dance students who wanted to quit self-critiquing in the mirror and rediscover the joy of dancing for themselves. So they ditched the lycra and turned out the lights! In the 15 years since then, NLNL has grown organically to over 60 locations worldwide!
Whatever makes you feel comfortable! Most people wear activewear as you'll likely work up a sweat. Yes, lycra is totally allowed!
Hot tip: most first timers regret wearing jeans!
We love your ideas! If you have music suggestions, feel free to pop as many as you like into our ‘NLNL Suggestion Box’ playlist on Spotify - this will help guide what we play. The playlists change each week and we try to accommodate everyone's tastes at every session (we are a diverse crowd!) – this means we won’t please everyone all the time, but hope to please most of you most of the time!
Yes! If you're under 15 then we need you to bring along a guardian, and if you're planning on bringing little ones we strongly recommend you give it a try yourself first (and remember some of the music we play may have swears in it!).
You won't. But if it turns out it's not your thing, you're welcome to leave at any point and no-one will notice anyway!
It's light enough so that you can see the silhouettes of people around you, but dark enough so that you can't make out their features. We aim for a sweet spot between creating a foolproof judgement-free space, and safety! When the lights first go out, it will seem pitch black, but after a few minutes your eyes will adjust and you can find your space to bust a move. If you have any queries at all during the session, an NLNL rep is in the foyer at all times for you to go and have a chat to.
Heaps of people do! Attending alone is totally normal, welcome and even encouraged!
Nope! No matter how dark or subtle you think you’re being with your phone – it’s really bright, and it disturbs the magic of the darkness for everyone else, so make sure it’s hidden away where we can’t see it.
Same goes for fitbits or any watches with lights - either cover with a REALLY thick sweatband, or leave them at home.
We really encouragn you to use this opportunity to turn devices off and shut out the rest of the world – this is time for YOU!
Because this unique experience allows you to forget appearances and focus solely on music and movement. It's a chance to let your brain shut off from the world around you - it's just you, your body, and the beat, moving however feels good for you.
At No Lights No Lycra we believe that dancing is for everybody and every body. Our mission is to bring the joy of dancing in the dark to as many people as possible. Keeping you dancing is our number one priority, and with the cost of living crisis we recognise that cost may present a barrier to dancing for those experiencing financial hardship. We are excited to offer this community-built fund for those that would love to join our dancefloor but are unable to afford it.
Donations of any amount can be made when purchasing tickets, and are received with heartfelt gratitude. In the event that we receive funds that exceed demand, we will re-invest those funds directly into the NLNL community by way of events (including special events) and equipment upgrade/maintenance .
If you, or someone you know, is in need of a dance but needs a little financial help, please email nlnlperth@gmail.com.
Then you can come every week, for the rest of your life.
Corroborees and Nyumbis have been taking place on this land for more than 65,000 years as an essential part of the cultural and spiritual life of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. NLNL is held on Whadjuk Noongar Country, and we express our gratitude and respect to elders past and present for tending to the land and waters so that we may be here today. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.
